Cease-and-desist order upheld re basketball at Fair Lawn shul

Scott Levy, chairman of Fair Lawn’s zoning board of adjustment, announced on Monday night the board’s 6-1 decision to affirm the cease-and-desist order against the Fair Lawn Jewish Center/Congregation B’nai Israel issued on Sept. 26, 2007 after neighbors complained of excessive noise from basketball games in the synagogue’s gym.

The three and one-half hour special meeting followed a year of discussions and tabled hearings on the issue. Jeffrey Hermann represented the congregation at the hearing. When asked by this newspaper what further action may be taken, he said, “We have several decisions to make, one of which is to appeal.”
