On July 3, Bris Avrohom sponsored a gala bar mitzvah celebration at the Western Wall in Jerusalem that included 27 boys from Be’er Sheva and five refugees from Zhitomir, Ukraine. The Ukrainian boys were from the Olameinu orphanage (Alumim Home for Jewish Children). Bris Avrohom rescued them at the start of the war and sent them to Israel.

Bris Avrohom donors Leon and Roz Kozak of Englewood, Jonathon Sherman of West Orange, and Miriam and Martin Knecht of Hillside also were there for the celebration.

Each child received a pair of tefillin. Families received silver-plated candlesticks and kiddush cups, a siddur, a book of Tehillim, and a leather-bound Zemiros Shabbat.

The ceremony included the boys putting on tefillin and reciting the Shema in unison; each boy got an aliyah. For information about Bris Avrohom’s activities and events, go to brisavrohom.org.
