Letter writer Scott David Lippe is preaching civil war in Israel.
I suggest that Dr. Lippe visit the Begin museum in Jerusalem. In the museum, there is a portrait of Prime Minister Menachem Begin with the words, “After my death, I hope that I shall be remembered above all as someone who prevented civil war.” Mr. Begin ordered his men not to retaliate after the Altalena cargo ship, carrying arms to the Irgun, was ordered destroyed by Ben-Gurion. A civil war during the war of independence would have been the death of Israel.
For any state to survive, the army must remain loyal and obedient to the state. In a democracy, a citizen has free speech and the ballot box to promote his/her views. Civil war is a very bad and destructive option.
