The July 23 feature article on Kutsher’s Country Club brought back fond memories of my family’s annual but short summer vacations up there in the 1950s. I remember seeing Floyd Patterson train there – they actually had a ring set up in the ballroom area. But one thing you forgot to mention was that Red Auerbach, during his hey-day as the venerable coach of the Boston Celtics, spent his summers at KCC. He was never without his cigar as he and other guests played hours of poker. We, as kids, would mimic them and play too; however, because of the consternation of the hotel staff and other guests we’d have to relocate our game on occasion. Of course, we played for pennies while they played for dollars, but it did improve my poker skills. As you would expect, Auerbach did coach the KCC basketball team, which was made up of bellboys and waiters – funny how they always won!
