Addressing abuse head on
We also want to extend a sincere and even grateful yasher koach to Rabbi Yosef Adler, principal of the Torah Academy of Bergen County and religious leader of Teaneck’s Congregation Rinat Yisrael, and Rabbi Eliyahu Teitz of the Jewish Educational Center in Elizabeth for the way their schools dealt with allegations of sexual abuse by a former teacher.
In both cases, school officials quickly alerted police and then took the added step of letting parents know of the allegations. TABC, at least, also moved quickly to arrange for counseling for its students.
In recent months, we have seen careers ruined and distinguished institutions badly tarnished because people in charge chose to ignore abuse allegations, for whatever reason. TABC and JEC acted the way a Torah-based institution should act and the way we would hope all institutions would act.
