A modest proposal
As a Jewish American, I fully understand Israel’s extreme response to stop Hamas’ rocket attacks. However, since it has also resulted in the death and suffering of hundreds of innocent Gazans, I offer this proposal:
Considering the possibility of renewed hostilities, Israel should use the current cease-fire to set up a few temporary refugee camps near the Gaza’s eastern border, allowing civilians to enter through tightly screened checkpoints. Women, children, the old, and the disabled could find haven there on a voluntary basis, and international relief teams could operate free of bombardment from either side.
There might be few takers – or the checkpoints might be flooded. Who knows? But Israel will be doing more to preserve life as it does its best to defend itself.
