Deportation — passion or law?
Thank you for printing the reply by Herbert Burack to my letter concerning Khalil Mahmoud (April 4). Mr. Burack correctly notes that the government has recently alleged visa application failures as an additional basis for deportation. These allegations, made after I submitted my letter, are an obvious pretext to address the blowback arising from Mr. Mahmoud’s arrest. The White House, the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security are all on record that the basis for deportation is the statute cited in my original letter. Mr. Burack’s failure to address the application of that statute to Mr. Mahmoud’s case helps to prove my point that the outcry for deportation is premised more on passion than on law.
