Artist Herb Stern will display his artwork in an exhibit, “Random Strokes,” at the Englewood public library from January 5 to 30. The opening reception is set for Sunday, January 5, from 2 to 4 p.m.

“As the title of my exhibit implies, randomness provides an essential aspect to our lives, which we often overlook,” Mr. Stern said. “A random occurrence brings a change in direction, an insight that rewards us with a new thought, a chance meeting that changes our lives. In my paintings I allow chance to play its role, then purposeful decisions follow. The result is order out of chaos.”

Mr. Stern, now a professional graphic artist and marketing director, worked for a media conglomerate specializing in computer technology. His personal interests led him to painting and printmaking, which he studied and practiced with the Art Center of Northern New Jersey in New Milford.

He paints in various media including acrylics, oils, and watercolors, as well as collage, and his printmaking techniques include etching, lithography, and silkscreen.

His works have been displayed in solo and group exhibits including in the Englewood, Teaneck, and Fair Lawn libraries, Kaplen JCC on the Palisades, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Bergen Community College, and Ringwood Manor Association of the Arts.
