WATCH: Israel’s massive Negev army base named after Ariel Sharon
90,000 soldiers a year to train there - making the Negev Desert truly bloom
The Sharon Training Base is an initiative to move IDF bases located in the thickly populated center of the country to Israel’s Negev region, which remains a settlement priority.
Backers of the plan say it will invigorate the local economy in the Negev region as career army families move to the area and soldiers gain familiarity with the region during their service.
The base itself is named for Israel’s late prime minister Ariel Sharon.
