Wheels for Meals rides for Meals on Wheels

Riders are raring to start the 10 mile ride.

Last Sunday, 320 riders pedaled courses ranging from three to 50 miles, and they were joined by dozens of walkers and masses of enthusiastic onlookers at the fifth annual Wheels for Meals — Ride to Fight Hunger.

The fundraiser was a project of the Jewish Family Service of Bergen and North Hudson; it supports JFS’s Meals on Wheels program and its community food pantry. Last year, JFS delivered 28,000 nutritionally balanced meals to the homebound elderly and to disabled Bergen County residents.

Andrew Gould, Randy Breindel, Mara Miller, Dan Dean, and Dave Schwartz were ride marshals.

This year, the three-mile course was dedicated to the memory of Cindy Pikul, a former ride marshal and triathelete who died of cancer last year.

The JFS’s Susan Greenbaum stands with the Jewish Standard’s publisher, Jamie Janoff.

The day included music and a DJ, as well as exhibits by vendors. Corporate sponsors provided both money and goods and services.

Volunteers, including this group, made the day go smoothly.

So far, JFS has raised nearly $120,000 from participants and sponsors. It will accept donations until the end of the year at www.ridetofighthunger.com.
