The Israel Action committee at Congregation Ahavat Achim of Fair Lawn and the Glen Rock Jewish Center partnered to host IDF reservist Adi Karni earlier this month. The program, at Ahavat Achim, drew 60 people and was held for the shuls’ shared mission — supporting Israeli soldiers,

Rabbi Ely Shestack led a recitation of the MiShebeirach prayer for the IDF soldiers’ welfare. In a symbolic moment, Mr. Karni removed the yellow ribbon pin from his lapel, marking the return of the final hostage’s body to Israel from Gaza. He discussed his service and his ongoing mission, telling Israel’s story during his travels around the world. That includes supporting IDF soldiers as they recover from their experiences, and describing the realities and challenges they face, drawing from his experience in combat. Using photos and video, he talked about the trauma of losing three of his closest friends from his plugah — his unit.

Recognizing the emotional burden the soldiers carry, Ahavat Achim and the GRJC partnered with Mr. Karni and Peace of Mind to help address combat-related PTSD. Peace of Mind is a therapeutic intervention program run by the Metiv Israel Psychotrauma Center in Jerusalem. The program provides IDF veterans with the time, space, and professional support needed to process their combat experiences, strengthening their emotional resilience and easing their transition back to civilian life.
