Valley Chabad will fly New Jersey’s first drone menorah or “Dronora” at the Chanukah celebration outside River Vale’s town hall on Monday, December 19, at 5:30 p.m.

“Chanukah’s message is about spreading the warmth and light of the menorah,” Rabbi Dov Drizin, Valley Chabad’s rabbi and executive director, said. “We want to bring families together to stand proud and tall with their Jewish heritage. This year’s Chanukah takes on added significance in the face of growing public antisemitic rhetoric by rapper Kanye West and others. The drone menorah idea is an exciting way for the children to enjoy the holiday in a fun creative way.”

The drone will be flown by airline pilot Kalvin King, the founder and CEO of Alpha Aviation, Inc., a drone and aircraft flight school in Morristown; Alpha Aviation is an MWBE-certified company with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The program includes the menorah lighting, latkes, donuts, and prizes for the children. There will also be the fire truck chocolate gelt drop. The River Vale Children’s Choir will perform Chanukah songs.

Valley Chabad also will have public menorah lightings on Sunday, December 18, at 4 p.m., at the Montvale Train Station; at 5 at the Westwood Train Station; and at 6 at the Washington Township Borough Hall.
