New York Cantors
The Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey presents the New York Cantors at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, November 3, 3 p.m. The group started as a PBS project, when three young cantors were brought together in Amsterdam’s revered 17th-century Portuguese Synagogue for a concert of Jewish sacred and secular music arranged for orchestra and choir. The cantors all work in synagogues in New York. Yaakov (Yanky) Lemmer is head cantor of the Lincoln Square Synagogue; Azi Schwartz is the cantor at Park Avenue Synagogue; and Netanel Hershtik is the cantor at the Hampton Synagogue in Westhampton Beach. The evening will include new arrangements by the Dutch composer/arranger Bob Zimmerman, as well as favorite secular songs evoking memories of Jewish tradition and its rich musical culture. 30 North Van Brunt St. (201) 227-1030 or www.bergenpac.org or www.ticketmaster.com
