Temple Emanu-El of Closter’s annual celebration, this year called “Making a Difference Together,” is set for Saturday, March 7. Amy and Philip Cushmaro will receive the Founders’ award, and Jocelyn and Evan Schwarz are the Young Leadership awardees. The honorees are being recognized for their outstanding service and philanthropy to the community. The evening includes a dueling pianos performance by Shake Rattle & Roll, featuring Mark Weiser.

The Cushmaros have been members of Temple Emanu-El for 18 years. Both Amy and Philip were shul treasurers, helping navigate finances during a period of expansion and growth. The couple met in Israel. Amy is a past president of the board of the Solomon Schechter Day School in New Milford; for 10 years she was on the board of the Leffell School (the former Schechter Westchester) in Hartsdale. She also was a Berrie Fellow and has been on the boards of the Davidson School, the JCRC, and the University of Rochester Hillel. She has helped raise more than $3 million for the Schechter Endowment Fund at SSDS. Phil first got involved philanthropy working with the now-closed Schechter Regional High School in Teaneck and then became Emanu-El’s treasurer and vice president. He supports many causes, including AIPAC, JNF, FIDF, and Englewood Health. The couple has two sons, Tal and Adam, and one daughter-in-law, Tal’s wife, Rachel.

Jocelyn and Evan Schwarz of Tenafly met on Jdate, even though they lived just six blocks away from each. Jocelyn grew up going to Temple Emanu-El — the shul’s Cantor, Israel Singer, officiated at her bat mitzvah. Evan has been an active member of the shul community for many years, recently as men’s club president, and now as a member of shul’s executive board. Jocelyn, an active member of the Tenafly community, is vice president of the Tenafly Board of Education. Evan is involved in many dental organizations, including World of Smiles. The couple has two daughters, Marni and Maddi.
