Director Roberta Grossman screens and discusses her latest film, “Above and Beyond,” at the Museum of Jewish Heritage-A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, on Wednesday, January 28, at 7 p.m.
The film tells the story of a group of Jewish American World War II veterans who volunteered to fight for Israel and smuggled planes out of the United States during the 1948 War of Independence. As members of Machal – “volunteers from abroad” – the group laid the groundwork for the Israeli Air Force. The film includes interviews with surviving pilots, scholars, and statesmen, including Shimon Peres; archival footage, and special effects by George Lucas’ Industrial Light & Magic. It is the first major documentary about the subject.
The museum is at 36 Battery Place in New York City. For information, call (646) 437-4202 or go to www.mjhnyc.org.
