Congregation Sons of Israel in Nyack recently received several awards from United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism’s METNY region. The synagogue received gold recognition in special programming for its Visions lecture series, in family education for its Watermelon Wednesdays story time, and for its early childhood center, adult education and young adult categories.

The congregation received silver recognition for its website and social networking, and for in the Israel Awareness category.

As well, the synagogue received a micro-grant for its outreach to young adults. Only 20 congregations received these nationally.

Meanwhile, the congregation’s Rabbi Jeffrey Abraham graduated from the first Big Tent Judaism professional affiliates program. He was one of 16 professional from across North America to take part in the pilot program, which has a goal of creating a more inclusive Jewish community.

He and the congregation were also noted in Big Ten Judaism’s recent report about public space Judaism. Big Tent Judaism aims to assist organizations in creating a Jewish community that is more inclusive.
