It is possible to agree with all three – Hillary Clinton, Tom Friedman and Jason Edelstein (“Dear Tom and Hillary: A letter of concern for American democracy,” Dec. 30).
Even Likud stalwarts such as Benny Begin have decried what would happen to Israel’s democratic values if the Knesset passed laws that would limit the fundraising options of Israel’s social justice organizations. And, as Jason Edelstein points out, we here in the United States have our own anti-democratic demons to deal with. But Edelstein’s conclusion – that, given our own challenges, we should not worry about the dangerous path Israel’s government is heading down – is wrong. If we truly care about each other, Israelis will welcome our concerns for their well-being, as we should welcome theirs.
