The so-called Ta’anit Tzedek – monthly communal fast – being organized by an “ad hoc group of rabbis, Jews, and people of conscience” (according to the Website and mentioned in the July 17 Standard) represents a profusely distorted view of Jewish humanitarianism. I cannot but wonder if this same group of Jews “of conscience” held communal fasts to protest the expulsion of 10,000 Jewish residents from Gaza in 2005 (many of whom are still jobless and living in temporary housing), or to draw attention to frequent rocket attacks on innocent Jews (including children and the elderly) in Sderot, or to express anguish at the continued captivity of hostage Gilad Shalit, in clear violation of the Geneva Convention.
