Last month, nearly 125 differently abled athletes and more than 100 volunteers came to the annual Special Games, presented by the Chuck Guttenberg Center for the Physically Challenged at the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades in Tenafly.

The inclusive field day offered 14 events, including golf putt, basketball, softball throw, Frisbee toss, soccer kick and bowling, and new events like lacrosse throw, volleyball, track, and beach volleyball. All athletes, who wore their Special Games T-shirts, received ribbons for every event they participated in. The day ended with a barbecue and music by DJ Randi Rae.

This year, the field day featured new access mats that provide improved wheelchair and walker access on the outdoor field and allow more accessibility and inclusion.

Special Games is held by the JCC Guttenberg Center for Special Services and is supported through the Chuck Guttenberg Center for the Physically Challenged, established by Adele and Bill Guttenberg in loving memory of their son Chuck. For information, call Shelley Levy at (201) 408-1489 or email
